Water is understood to be a very basic element in human health.
The human body consists primarily of water, and it is essential as well to the various functions of the body.
The interest in the need for pure drinking water has been sparked by studies that have shown a significant increase in synthetic chemicals being found in ground water, lakes, and reservoirs that are not being filtered by traditional treatment systems.
This increased demand for new methods of purifying water has led to the development of several technologies, especially those that address the need for a reliable and safe method of filtering water in the home. One approach has been to bottle water and make it available for consumer use.
Unfortunately, this causes more problems, due to the shelf-life of plastic and its effect on the environment. Another methodology is the application of the scientific principle of reverse osmosis as a means of naturally screening out synthetic chemicals and harmful bacteria.
This method relies on the natural movement of water molecules in a controlled environment, using semi-permeable membranes made of fine pores to remove those elements that are of a larger molecular size than water.
The need for pure drinking water is not seen to be practical if the process results in the removal of any beneficial elements that occur naturally in water. This is one problem with reverse osmosis.
The porous membrane used in these systems actually removes trace minerals, such as potassium and magnesium, due to their larger molecular size. Mineral deficiencies are known to lead to more serious health problems and cell and tissue growth dysfunction.
Yet another problem with most water purification technologies is their inability to filter out more recently developed synthetic chemicals.
Many of these chemicals, such as methyl-t-butyl esters (MTBE) and trihalomethanes (THM), have been found to be extremely carcinogenic in nature. These elements and others will not be filtered by reverse osmosis, as they are of a smaller molecular size than water molecules.
The only method of water purification accepted by the EPA as being both efficient and safe to human health is one that employs activated carbon filters.
These systems, especially those that incorporate active carbon filters with a multi-media system of blocking impurities for home water filtering, will remove harmful chemicals and bacteria with a minimum of water waste, and are proven to be the most effective in the long run.
